PhD in Sociology at the University of Oradea

Doctorate in sociology at the University of Oradea can be either focused on advanced scientific research that produces significant and original contribution to the development of knowledge in the field, or professional, focused on applied research and professional disciplines. The academic program of PhD in sociology usually takes three years and ends with a PhD after the succesfull defence of PhD thesis. Over the three years of preparation the PhD student receives besides the guidance of the thesis coordinator, the support of a steering committee made up of staff of the University of Oradea. PhD students will receive advanced academic training which ensures students' participation in methodological training in the field and in other advanced courses in the field related with the subject of their thesis and are encouraged to participate in research projects and to materialize their research results through publications and participation in scientific meetings.

Admission requirements:

Candidates who do not speak Romanian can apply for studies in Romanian provided they take a preparatory language course one year before enrolment. At the end of the preparatory year, the candidates will acquire a Romanian language certificate. In case the candidate already has knowledge of Romanian language, they can take the Romanian language test at the Faculty of Letters and get a language certificate. Romanian language certificates will be accepted only from the Romanian Language Institute or Romanian universities accredited to issue such certificates.

All citizens of EU, SEE and the Swiss Confederation do no longer need an acceptance letter, but a CERTIFICATE issued by the National Centre for the Recognition and Equivalence of Diplomas at the Romanian Ministry of National Education. Once they acquire the certificate, the candidates can register for admission at the University of Oradea.

            Candidates who have graduated in Romania do not need an approval from the Ministry of Education.

            The application file for the acknowledgement of studies must be submitted to the International Relations Department/Office for Foreign Students at the University of Oradea. Files submitted by individual candidates are not processed by the Ministry of Education.

            Foreign students, non-EU citizens who wish to enroll at the University of Oradea must submit documents authenticated by the Romanian Embassy/Consulate directly to the International Relations Department, Office for Foreign Students.

Candidates send their files directly to the University who evaluates the files and sends the list of the proposed candidates to the Ministry of National Education – General Direction for International Relations in order to issue the letter of acceptance.

The General Direction for International Relations will issue the Letter of acceptance to studies and will send it to the University. The selection will be done at the level of each faculty and specialization.

Admission process

I. The entrance examination will take place in a single session: the admission interview to the Doctoral School of Sociology. During the interview candidates will present a doctoral research project and will be evaluated in terms of fundamental theoretical and methodological knowledge in sociology. Candidates will hand over to the admissions committee, before the interview, at least one copy of the doctoral research project.

II. Grading candidates

Scoring candidates will be on the following criteria: - 50% The GPA of BA (licence) and master studies (where the candidate more than one diploma of the same level the GPA is computed using the best results) - 25% the evaluations of the research project - 25% the evaluation of interview

III. Guide for drafting Doctoral Research Project:

- The project must address a topic or theme of sociological research or of interdisciplinary research where the sociological element is predominant

- The project must clearly state the following:

- The title and theme of the project

- Scientific objective of the project

- Outline of the conceptual and theoretical project

- The title of the expected results in terms of doctoral papers

- Expected timing of completing essays

- Proposals to disseminate the results through participation in conferences and publications in scientific journals Doctoral research project must have a minimum length of 3 to 4 pages A4, font size 12 in a row, TNR.

Fees:

Application

Before the file is processed, all candidates must pay a non-refundable processing file fee of 150 euro, a fee requested by the University of Oradea. The processing file fee will be paid to the University’s bank account before the application is submitted and it covers the expenses for the issuance of the certificate. Once the processing file fee is paid, it cannot be reimbursed.

Tuition:

All the citizens of EU, SEE and the Swiss Confederation have access to all forms of education in the same conditions as Romanians including tuition fees.

The tuition for non-UE students is 264 Euro/month.

In order to cover the expensesthe PhD thesis defence the candidate will pay a fee of 484 Euro.

Timeline for application

Application is open usually during the last two weeks of July (this year: July 18-29) and the 2nd and 3rd weeks of September (this year: September 5-16).

The admission will be scheduled during the last week of September (September 26-29)
